The Cadorna Line was the popular name for what was known officially as the “Northern Frontier” or, in full, the Italian defensive system on the Northern Border facing Switzerland (Italian: ‘Frontiera Nord’, ‘Il sistema difensivo italiano alla Frontiera Nord verso la Svizzera’). It was designed and built between 1899 and 1918 to protect the Po Valley and its main industrial centres from an attack by France, Germany or Austria-Hungary violating Swiss neutrality.
