The Treaty of El Pardo signed on 11 March 1778 sought to end conflict between Spain and Portugal in the Río de la Plata region, along the modern boundary between Argentina and Uruguay. It confirmed Spanish ownership of Colonia del Sacramento, now in Uruguay, while Portugal ceded possession of strategically important territories in Africa, now the modern state of Equatorial Guinea. In return, Spain withdrew from lands to the north, most of which are in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Il trattato aveva lo scopo di risolvere le ormai vetuste dispute territoriali tra i due paesi nella regione del Río de la Plata, dovute principalmente alla non piena osservanza del trattato di Tordesillas del 1494. (pl) O Tratado de El Pardo foi assinado em 11 de Março de 1778 entre a Rainha Maria I de Portugal e o Rei Carlos III de Espanha. Com base nos termos do tratado, a rainha Maria cedeu as ilhas de Ano Bom e Bioco (Formosa) para o Rei Carlos, assim como a costa do Golfo da Guiné entre a foz do rio Níger e a do Ogoué, no atual Gabão. Em troca desses territórios, Portugal adquiria faixas de territórios na América do Sul ao Brasil (grande parte do atual pampa gaúcho). A ilha de Formosa (chamada Fernão do Pó durante o Estado Português) foi oficialmente reconhecida e rebatizada como Fernando Poo. El tratado tenía como finalidad concretar el Tratado de San Ildefonso (1777) que resolvía las disputas territoriales de larga duración surgidas por la no observancia de los términos del tratado de Tordesillas. En particular, la disputa sobre el extremo sur del avance portugués en la región de Misiones Orientales, el actual Uruguay y partes de Paraguay había llevado a la Guerra Fantástica (1761-1763) y a la guerra hispano-portuguesa de 1776-1777.
